The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) apologised for chairman Agung Suprio’s statement saying that Saipul Jamil may appear on TV for educational purposes.

KPI Commissioner Mulyo Hadi Purnomo said that Agung used an ill-suited diction in his statement, which led to different perceptions among the public.

“Firstly, we really have to apologise for the choice of diction that was conveyed by the chairman, because it was very inappropriate,” he said on the Sapa Indonesia Pagi program.

Mulyo assumed that the chairman was supposed to say that the public could learn or reflect from Saipul’s case so they would not commit the same crime and be punished like him.

“I guess that's probably what the chairman wanted to convey, but he wasn't able to provide an adequate explanation because the question asked by Deddy is a leading question. Therefore, the public perceived it differently,” he explained. He emphasised that the crime Saipul committed is considered as a serious crime.

Mulyo also expressed his gratitude to the public because from the petition, he noticed that people are able to think more critically. The KPI will use it as reference for further improvement.
