It is confirmed that the most influential Korean boy group at the moment, BTS, is leaving Sony Music’s Columbia Records and Orchard distribution. This news was first reported by Billboard and no official statement has been released. However, Variety has confirmed that the group will partner with Universal Music Group.

There was no precedent prior to this move, except for the fact that HYBE (formerly Big Hit) announced a strategic partnership with Universal Music Group, including a joint-venture label.

It appeared that HYBE, which represents BTS, was on a monthly contract with The Orchard for distribution and only needed to notify Sony of its intentions to switch distributors. The move is expected to take effect on 1 December 2021.

The deal between Universal and HYBE would see the two work together to “increase opportunities for artists through innovation and technology, whilst expanding the global reach of K-pop music and culture around the world”. The partnership also sees a newly created label that will operate from Los Angeles.

BTS’ latest collaboration with Coldplay on the single “My Universe” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, which marked the K-Pop group’s sixth time topping the chart. They are also set to perform live in Los Angeles in November and December. Reportedly, the tickets are already sold out and a few have reached ticket-reselling websites, much to fans’ disdain.
