Indonesia Menari to be hosted virtually
After cancelling its event in 2020 due to the pandemic, Indonesia Menari is making its comeback in 2021. This time, Indonesia Kaya’s very own dance event will be held in the virtual space in order to comply with health protocols. The event will run from 1 September to 10 October 2021.
Indonesia Menari is Indonesia Kaya’s annual event that is aimed at shortening the gap between urban society and traditional dance. Through the event, Indonesia Kaya is striving to introduce Indonesian traditional dances using a modern approach. The event in 2019 was held simultaneously in seven cities, namely Jakarta, Bandung, Solo, Semarang, Medan, Makassar and Palembang.
One very unique point from Indonesia Menari 2021 is the intergenerational collaboration among three Indonesian choreographers: Didik Nini Thowok, Eko Supriyanto and Ufa Sofura. Together, they created a one minute long choreography by remixing three dance genres: traditional, contemporary and modern. They will also stand as judges of the competition.
Composer Eka Gustiwana took part in remixing five folk songs from different areas: Suwe Ora Jamu (Central Java), Apuse (Papua), Indung-Indung (East Kalimantan), Rambadia (North Sumatra) and Pakarena (South Sulawesi). Using the prepared choreography, all participants can start registering at Indonesia Kaya’s website and upload their video on their personal Instagram account in accordance with each category.
This year, Indonesia Kaya targets 10,000 participants from all over the country. However, the competition is open only for individual contestants to implement effective health protocols, even from afar. The competition is divided into three age groups with different timeline.
After the elimination round, 100 participants from each category will compete again in the semifinals on 25-29 September. The best 20 of each category will compete again at the final round on 10 October, which will be broadcast live via Indonesia Kaya’s YouTube channel at 13.00 WIB.
The final round will be held to coincide with the 8th anniversary of Indonesia Kaya Gallery and the 3rd anniversary of Indonesia Kaya Park.
